What are the White Sands?

The White Sands is the largest surface deposit of gypsum in the world. It is rare to find such a vast amount of pure gypsum as it is highly soluble. Gypsum is a hydrous form of calcium sulphate and usually dissolves from rain; however since the Tularosa Basin has no river to distribute the dissolved gypsum to the sea, the water and gypsum is trapped within the basin.

Though there aren’t many plants and animals that live in the white dunes, there are plenty of other things to do there. But if you’re lucky enough to see a few small animals, you’ll notice they seem white, almost translucent, this is because they have adapted and camouflaged among the white sands.
